The state Department of Transportation is warning Big Island motorists that Bayfront Highway has been temporarily closed in both directions near Hilo Bay from Waianuenue Avenue to Pauahi Street because of high-surf conditions.

Drivers are advised to use Kamehameha Avenue as an alternate route. Officials say Bayfront will reopen once the waves subside and debris has been cleared.
