Bryant Moniz knows he has an arsenal of weapons at his disposal on offense. Last night, his most lethal one was Greg Salas.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior slotback tied his season high with 10 catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Warrior offense in a 49-36 win over Utah State.

"It's like our receivers say, when they do their yell as a unit, they always say 'playmakers' and that's what they are," said Moniz, who finished with 337 passing yards and four TDs. "Anytime we get the ball into one of their hands, they're going to do great things."

The night started on a sour note for the UH offense as Moniz's first pass attempt — intended for Salas — was intercepted by Utah State's Kejon Murphy, but it didn't stop him from going back to his favorite target.

Early in the second quarter, Moniz found Salas on an out route to the right flat. After he hauled in the pass, Salas took on two defenders and fought for 10 yards and a first down. On the very next play, he made a block that allowed Jovonte Taylor to score on a 35-yard pass to put UH ahead 21-7.

"He's real steady," UH offensive coordinator Ron Lee said of Salas. "He's been doing a good job catching the ball, running after the catch, and along the way, he's been making really, really tough catches."

On the Warriors' next drive, Salas picked up 33 yards on a short pass to the left and Leon Wright-Jackson scored his second rushing touchdown of the game two plays later.

Salas said UH's running game — which racked up 360 yards — helped the passing game.

"It's a tremendous help and it really opened up things for us," Salas said. "If (the defense) has to bring up extra defenders to help against the run, then it opens up the receivers and gives them some one-on-one looks, which we thought we could exploit."

Salas put UH ahead 35-7 with 2:25 left in the second quarter on a 10-yard crossing route at the goal line.

On the Warriors' second drive of the third quarter, Salas caught a 17-yarder and, three plays later, he hauled in a 59-yard pass. Wright-Jackson scored on a 5-yard run on the next play.

Salas' second score came early in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard pass.

Salas credited fellow slotback Jon Medeiros with sparking the offense.

"Jon started it off with the big play and that just pumped everybody up," Salas said of the 57-yard TD pass from Moniz to Medeiros in the first quarter. "We all wanted to make big plays and compete with each other after that and that only makes us better."
