20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall marked
Honolulu Community College, home to one of only three sections of the Berlin Wall donated by the Berlin senate, will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the felling of the wall with a campus ceremony on Monday.
The fall of the Berlin Wall, which divided the former East and West Germanys, marked a symbolic end to the Cold War.
Three years later, HCC history professor Rick Ziegler and a group of students succeeded in obtaining a three-ton piece of the wall for the campus. Architect Tina Mehnert, whose family fled from East Germany, fashioned a monument from the section of wall.
Monday's event starts at 1 p.m. at the monument site and will include comments from Mehnert, HCC history professor Pat Patterson, HCC chancellor Mike Rota and student leader Poima Sataua, as well as a re-consecration ceremony and a screening of a short documentary on the Berlin Wall.
