The first-ever GiRL FeST Hawaii mural will be showcased Friday evening at GiRL FeST’s Art Gallery opening reception.
This is the sixth annual GiRL FeST Hawaii festival, which aims to prevent violence against women and girls through education and art, gets under way Friday and will continue through 14th. The gallery reception is set for 5-7 p.m. at ING Direct Cafe, 1958 Kalakaua Ave.
The mural artists include girls tied to Hawaii Girls Court, a program under Family Court of the First Judicial Circuit. Hawaii Girls Court is one of the first courts in the nation built on gender-specific and strengths-based programming that targets female juvenile offenders.
The girls completed the mural under the leadership of John “Prime” Hina, a graffiti artist since the 1980s and founder of 808 Urban, an organization that mentors youth in the artistic and legal form of graffiti.
GiRL FeST Hawaii, an all-volunteer non profit group, incorporates film, music, art, spoken word, dance, sports, and a mini-conference that addresses themes such as body image, identity, empowerment, social change, and methods on how to prevent violence in relationships and the community.
