Police shoot suspected car thief at KFC in Waikele Shopping Center
WAIKELE — A 23-year-old suspected car thief was shot three times today by Honolulu police who blocked the stolen car at a KFC drive-up window in Waikele Center, according to police Maj. Dave Kajihiro.
The man was taken in critical condition to The Queen’s Medical Center with two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and another to the arm, Kajihiro said.
One officer was struck by the white Dodge Durango when it tried to evade police around 12:15 p.m., Kajihiro said, and another officer injured his back while trying to arrest two occupants of the Durango.
A patrol car had blocked the Durango from behind while a van containing Crime Reduction Unit officers pulled up directly in front of the Durango, Kajihiro said.
Two CRU officers fired at the driver of the Durango after he tried to escape and struck an officer, Kajihiro said.
A 25-year-old woman in the front passenger seat and a 25-year-old man in the back seat were uninjured, Kajihiro said.
The Durango was reported stolen Monday from a home on Hooike Street in Pearl City, Kajihiro said.
Today, the son of the owner saw the Durango parked in front of his father’s house and called police, who dispatched a tow truck to retrieve the vehicle.
Two men were then seen getting into the Durango and driving off. Police pursued the Durango to the Waikele KFC and blocked it from behind and from the front while it was in the drive-through lane.
