Third-ranked Hawai'i ran its volleyball winning streak to 16 for the season last night. The Rainbow Wahine also reached 20 victories for their 16th consecutive season.

The 'Bows swept Nevada, 25-16, 25-20, 25-17, in a Western Athletic Conference match played before 686 at Virginia Street Gym in Reno. Most were rooting for the visitors, after walking down the hill from football. The Rainbow Wahine watched part of the second and third quarters.

His team's performance, and the "away team advantage," left UH coach Dave Shoji happy about everything but the football score.

He called his team's offense "crisper" than Thursday. Setter Dani Mafua found sophomore All-American Kanani Danielson (15 kills, .306) and seniors Aneli Cubi-Otineru (11, .533) and Amber Kaufman (10, .643) for 36 kills on .431 hitting.

He also praised the passing, defense and serving, starting with Stephanie Brandt's two aces in the first four serves.

"I'm always looking for the perfect game and there are always things holding us back from playing a perfect game," said Shoji. "But there are no major complaints. It was a good effort. I think the crowd was helping us. There were a lot of Hawai'i people. That's always nice."

The Rainbow Wahine (20-2, 10-0 WAC) lead the conference by three matches since Idaho beat New Mexico State Thursday, giving every other WAC team at least three losses.

UH ends this trip tomorrow at San Jose State. Its final homestand is next weekend, against Fresno State (Friday) and Utah State (Sunday).

The Wolf Pack (8-16, 4-7) is fighting for a place in the WAC Tournament, which has been cut to six teams. Five teams are chasing the final three spots, with Nevada falling into sixth with the loss.

The 'Pack could not help itself last night. UH had four aces to pull ahead 12-6 in the opening set. It breezed through with Kaufman and Danielson getting four kills apiece.

Nevada kept closer the final two sets, winning the first three points in Set 2 to force a Shoji timeout. Hawai'i rallied to tie it at 8. It was tied again at 12 before the 'Bows pulled away.

The final set was tied at 14, before Danielson and Cubi-Otineru finished the Wolf Pack off.

"Against these teams we should be more balanced," Shoji said. "But I guess when something is working it's not wise do something else when it's open."

Mafua found her hitters open early and often. Hawai'i out-hit Nevada .394 to .202 and added eight aces. Freshman Brittany Hewitt was in on six of UH's seven stuffs, while Danielson had four.

Saint Francis graduate Kylie Harrington had 10 kills to lead the Wolf Pack for the 19th time this year.
