A man who died in a horse-riding accident at the Haleakalä National Park Monday has been identified as Edward Wilson of Maui.
Wilson died after he apparently fell while riding a horse on the Halemauçu Trail, a steep trail in the Haleakalä crater. Maui Fire Department and the National Park Service received a call at about 1 p.m. Monday that a man had fallen off the trail.
Because of the steep terrain and cloudy weather, rescue crews were unable to recover Wilson’s body until first light today. The trail was closed Monday night and early today while park rangers investigated the incident.
The National Park Service said Wilson was an experienced horseman and frequent visitor to the park’s Wilderness Area.
