Sahra Indio

Big Island reggae vocalist Sahra Indio sings positive messages such as "be the change you want to see in this world," and when it comes to living green, she doesn't just sing it. Since the 1970s, when she lived in Berkeley, Calif., Indio has been living green.
Indio gave birth to her four children at home and home-schooled them. At her South Kona home set on 5 acres, she uses solar and propane to run her appliances. On the new moon in April she planted 120 pounds of organic coffee. She also grows organic avocados, collard greens, mangoes, kaffir lime, kalo, okra, poha, bananas, tomatoes and lavender. "We eat off the land. All we buy is eggs and soy milk," she said with pride and passion.
She even chooses to perform in green venues such as farmers markets and kawa bars.
We spotted Indio in the audience at the "Green Style on the Big Isle" fashion show last month in Kailua, Kona. She was wearing a striking hat, skirt and slippers that she made herself.
True to her green approach to life, Indio fashioned her clothing with found and recycled materials.
"I'm a minimalist and I try to use things as close as possible to their original form," Indio said. This applies to her clothing, accessories, shoes and even furniture.
"I've always been attracted to trees and branches. After moving to Hawai'i, with its big variety of flora, I found it talked to me," she said.
Indio's turban is molded from palm fiber and embellished with shells. Her slippers are made of banana leaf and recycled burlap and cardboard. Her skirt is fashioned from recycled "country cloth" from Mali that has been mud-dyed.
Here's a woman who dresses in her beliefs.
