Fresno State rallies past New Mexico State, 9-7, forces WAC playoff

Jordan Ribera’s two-out, two-run home run in the top of the ninth snapped a 7-all game to propel Fresno State to a 9-7 win against New Mexico State to force a playoff the championship of the NAPA Auto Parts Western Athletic Conference baseball tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.
Since each team has one loss in the double-elimination tournament, the playoff is set to start at 3:45 p.m. It is the first time since the revival of the tournament in 2006 that a playoff has been forced.
Ribera homered off Justin Cooper (2-1), who gave up a two-out opposite field single to left to Tom Mendonca to set up the go-ahead hit.
Holden Sprague (7-4) pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Bulldogs (31-28 overall, 3-1 in the tournament). He got a game-ending double play with the bases loaded against the Aggies (44-16, 3-1 tournament).
The Bulldogs broke the scoreless deadlock with a two-out, solo home run to left-center by Tom Mendonca in the top of the third inning.
Fresno State cushioned its lead in the fourth on one-out, back-to-back doubles from Kenny Wise and Gavin Hedstrom to make it 2-0.
The Aggies sent nine batters to the plate in a four-run fourth to take the lead. Kyle Decater was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, another runner scored on a wild pitch and pinch hitter Chuck Howard grounded a two-run single to center to give NMSU a 4-2 lead.
The Aggies again sent nine batters to the plate in a three-run fifth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Leo Aguirre, RBI single by Wes Schneider and bases-loaded walk by Richard Stout to make it 7-2.
The Bulldogs cut their deficit with two in the sixth after Jordan Ribera singled and took third on Brennan Gowens’ double with both scoring on RBI ground outs from Kenny Wise and Hestrom to make it 7-4.
Fresno State tied it with a three-run eighth. Starter Jared Jordan loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. Reliever Scott Coffman’s wild pitch advanced the runners, pulling FSU to 7-5. Kenny Wise’s sacrifice fly to center advanced the runners to make it 7-6. Coffman was pulled for Justin ooper, who got Hestrom ib a grounder to short, holding the runner with the infield in. But Trent Garrison’s ground single to center tied it at 7.
