MANCHESTER, England — Oscar Pistorius used a late surge to overtake Jerome Singleton and win the 100 meters at the Paralympic World Cup on Sunday.
The 22-year-old double amputee from South Africa, in his first race since breaking ribs in a boating accident in February, made up ground and won in 11.13 seconds, beating Singleton by 0.03.
Pistorius, who runs on artificial blades attached to his lower legs, was beaten out of the blocks by the American who finished behind him in the Paralympics in Beijing last year.
Later Sunday, Pistorius is to run at his specialty distance, the 400 meters.
Pistorius, who needed a ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport last year to show his carbon fiber blades don't give him an advantage, is striving to run against the top athletes at the World Championships in Berlin Aug. 15-23.
