Maui's Cyr wins NAIA golf title

Point Loma Nazarene senior Sam Cyr, a King Kekaulike graduate from Makawao, Maui, won his second straight NAIA Golf Championship yesterday, shooting an even-par 71 to finish with a three-shot victory at TPC at Deere Run Golf Course in Silvis, Ill.
Cyr (72-72-67-71) finished the four-round tournament at 2-under 282 to beat Texas Wesleyan's Armando Villareal (285). Cyr was the only golfer to finish the tournament under par and he is the first golfer to win back-to-back titles since North Florida's Jamie Burns in 1992 and 1993.
Cyr's 67 in Thursday's third round moved him into first-place with a five-shot lead. He had 10 pars and four birdies in the final round.
The win was the 12th for Cyr and he finishes his career as a four-time All-American.
Oklahoma Christian won the team title and Point Loma Nazarene finished tied for 12th.

ASU WINS TEAM TITLE; KONO TIES FOR 16TH
Purdue's Maria Hernandez shot a 1-under 71 yesterday for a one-stroke victory in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship, and Arizona State beat UCLA by eight shots for its seventh team title.
Hernandez, a senior from Spain, had a 1-over 289 total on the Caves Valley course at Owing Hills, Md.
UCLA freshman Stephanie Kono, a Punahou alum, finished tied for 16th at 75—298. New Mexico sophomore Britney Choy (Leilehua alum) ended tied for 32nd with a 78—302, and Arizona senior Amanda Wilson (Waiakea) finished tied for 54th at 76—307.
Southern California's Jennifer Song (74) was second at 290 with Oklahoma State's Pernilla Lindberg (69) third at 291.
Arizona State won the national title for the first time since 1998, shooting a 3-over 291 to finish at 30-over 1,182. UCLA was second at 297—1,190.
BASEBALL
UHH'S MANAGO ON WEST REGION TEAM
University of Hawai'i-Hilo sophomore outfielder Keoni Manago was selected to the NCAA ABCA/Rawlings West Region first team as voted by West Region coaches.
Manago, the Pacific West Conference Player of the Year, batted .435.
Each member of the West Region first team is eligible for NCAA Division II All-America consideration.
