SOL BATOON TAKES OVER AS ST. FRANCIS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Sol Batoon has been named athletic director of St. Francis School.

The K-12 school began admitting boys a few years ago and last year also participated in Pac-Five intermediate football. Next school year the 85-year-old school will have its first freshmen boys.

In addition to football and basketball for boys, the school also added golf and track and field for both genders. The school will add baseball next school year.

Batoon has served as basketball head coach at St. Joseph's in Hilo, Damien Memorial School and Kaiser and Campbell high schools.

HONORS

GABRIO, GOO GIVEN GATORADE RECOGNITION

Jayann Gabrio of Punahou School and Nick Goo of 'Iolani School have been named the Gatorade Hawai'i girls and boys soccer Players of the Year, respectively.

Gabrio and Goo are finalists for the Gatorade National Girls and Boys Soccer Player of the Year awards to be announced later this month.

Goo, a 5-foot-7, 125-pound junior forward, recorded nine goals and nine assists this past season, leading the Raiders (14-0-1) to the Division I state championship.

Goo scored two goals and added two assists in the state title game, a 5-2 'Iolani win over Mililani, and was named the Division I state tournament MVP despite playing the entire postseason with a hairline fracture of his collarbone.

Gabrio, a 5-foot-9 senior defender, scored four goals this past season and anchored the back line of a defense that recorded 12 shutouts and allowed just six goals in 16 games, leading Punahou (13-0-3) to the Division I state title.

Gabrio scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Kamehameha in the state championship game.
