Hawai‘i’s Kolten Wong was voted Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.
The announcement was made at tonight’s pre-tournament awards banquet at the Stan Sheriff Center. The coaches voted for the all-conference team and major award winners this morning.

Wong was one of three Rainbows selected to the All-WAC first team. Joining him were junior first baseman Kevin Macdonald and senior starting pitcher Jayson Kramer.
The Rainbows also had one second-team selection in sophomore shortstop Greg Garcia.
San Jose State senior Ryan Shopshire was named Pitcher of the Year, while Fresno State junior third baseman Tom Mendonca was named Player of the Year.
San Jose State’s Sam Piraro was named Coach of the Year.
Wong was third in the WAC in hitting at .424 (conference only). He was tied for the league lead with 12 doubles (along with teammate Sean Montplaisir and Fresno State first-team second baseman Danny Muno) and was tied for fourth with 29 RBI. Five of his 11 home runs were hit in conference play.
Macdonald batted .337 and shared the WAC lead with Louisiana Tech first-team outfielder Devon Dageford and FSU’s Mendonca with 11 home runs and was second with 33 RBI. His 14 overall home runs is two shy of the UH school record set in 1983 by Joey Meyer.
Kramer led the WAC with a 4.15 earned run average, while posting a 3-1 record. After pitching solely in relief since his freshman year, he made his debut as a starting pitcher this season.
Garcia is a second-team selection for the second consecutive year. He hit .316 and led the WAC with five triples.
Shopshire was 4-0 with a 4.33 ERA He struck out 37 and walked 13 in 27 innings in helping the Spartans capture the regular season title.
Mendonca, the College World Series most outstanding player last season, has 24 home runs overall, ranking him second in the country.
Piraro guided the Spartans to the regular season championship after starting the conference season 1-3.
