A future theater star in the Bright household? Colton Seth Kelii Bright, born April 29 at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children, is the third child of actors Michael and Jade Bright, and sixth grandchild of director Ronald and Mo Bright. He weighed 9 pounds, 4 ounces, measured 21 inches and is "a real charmer already ... and has the best-sounding lungs thus far" among the family brood, according the proud grandparents. Dad Mike, who was Chris in last year's "Miss Saigon" at Windward Community College's Paliku Theatre, and mom Jade (who choreographed "Saigon") also have Caitlin, 11, and Drew, 2, and they wonder if Colton's brown hair will turn red, as Drew's did a few weeks after his birth.
Grandpa Ron gets to spoil the kid until rehearsals begin for his July Paliku musical, "West Side Story."...

BACKSTAGE BITS: In the name of art, Braddoc DeCaires, who portrays Duwell Early in Manoa Valley Theatre's "Duck Hunter Shoots Angel," allowed director Paul Mitri and hairstylist Greg Howell to execute a mullet haircut for the role of the Alabaman. "It's buzzed on the sides and long on the top and back," said DeCaires. "Ah, the things we do for theater." His work supervisors at Pan Pacifica Publications have taken it all in stride. For an earlier MVT role, in "Last Night of Ballyhoo," DeCaires' black hair was transformed to a bright orange hue. ...
Actor Ned Van Zandt is back from a New York trek, where he visited backstage with Jane Fonda after her "33 Variations" performance. (Van Zandt appeared in her "Coming Home" film years ago.) He also saw his former acting teacher at New York University, Olympia Dukakis, perform in her off-Broadway play, "The Singing Forrest." And yes, he visited with Loretta Ables Sayre at "South Pacific," where his pals in the company speak fondly of our local girl. Van Zandt, on the upcoming Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival's programming committee, looks forward to the closing-night gala at 5 p.m May 24, when "Milk" is screened and Oscar-winning producer-screenwriter Dustin Lance Black is introduced by Chris Lee, who assisted in acquiring the movie for the fest. ...
