Pirates place UH-Hilo alum Yates on disabled list

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH —Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny, a former 14-game winner who was demoted to the minors, was recalled by Pittsburgh from Triple-A Indianapolis today.

Gorzelanny takes the roster spot of right-handed Tyler Yates, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Saturday with an inflamed elbow. Yates was one of two Pirates relievers who did not pitch during a rain-delayed 7-4 victory over Colorado on Saturday night.
Yates is a Kaua‘i High and University of Hawai‘i-Hilo alum.
“We have the option of somebody who gives us some innings in case something goes wrong,” manager John Russell said. “We don’t want to put Gorzelanny in the bullpen right now, so this is most likely a short-term deal just to give us some coverage the next few days.

“At some point this season, we’ll need him to start.”

The 26-year-old Gorzelanny was bothered by wildness last season while going 6-9 with a 6.66 ERA, a year after he was 14-10 with a 3.88 ERA.

He was sent to the minors in spring training and was 1-1 with a 3.98 ERA in seven starts at Indianapolis. He had a 2.89 ERA in three starts this month.

Yates, the club’s top right-handed set-up man, was 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in 15 appearances. He’s been dealing with right elbow inflammation all season.

“It was just one of those things that it hurt when I threw, but I could get through it,” Yates said. “I’m just tired of throwing hurt.”
