Vercruyssen in synch, gets gold in elite event

Nani Vercruyssen, 17, of Roosevelt High School, won gold in the senior women's synchronized trampoline with Alaina Williams, 19, of Alabama in the US Elite Challenge in Fort Smith, Ark., last week.
In the individual trampoline competition, Vercruyssen was second with a 97.2 behind Williams (100.4) and both will represent the U.S. in all major international competitions in 2009. They will compete next week in the Frivolten Cup in Sweden followed by training with the Danish national team for a week. They also will compete as the U.S. synchronized trampoline team in Sweden and World Cups in Belgium and Poland.
Hawai'i's Annika Northrop, 12, the youngest elite in the U.S., placed seventh in Junior Women's Double Mini-trampoline. She qualified for the Visa (Elite National) Championships in August.
Vercruyssen and Northrop are coached by Max Vercruyssen and train at Hawaii Academy.
GYMNAST YEE EARNS TOP 20 AT JR. OLYMPICS
Joshua Yee finished in the top 20 in two events while competing against 218 14- to 15-year-old Level 10 gymnasts last weekend at the Junior Olympic Men's National Gymnastics Championship in Cincinnati.
Yee, the only Hawai'i qualifier, placed 11th on the high bar and 16th on the parallel bar semifinal. However, only the top six advanced to the event finals. In the prelims, he took eighth in the high bar and tied for 22nd in the parallel bar. His all-around score placed him 45th.
CHUN TOP 5 IN 3 EVENTS AT JR. OLY GYMNASTICS
Taryn Chun of Island Tumblers Gymnastics on O'ahu finished in the top five in three events at the Junior Olympic Gymnastics Championships in Bartlesville, Okla., last week.
Chun was one of six female gymnasts from Hawai'i who competed in the Level 9 event after qualifying in the regional championships.
Chun took fifth in the all-around, fourth in the bars, fourth on the beam, 11th on the vault and 21st on the floor.

Junior 3 Division: Allison Bushman, Hawaiian Island Twisters Gym: 8th on vault, sixth bars, 23rd beam, 18th floor, 23rd all-around.
Junior 4 Division: Tracie Villanueva, Hawaiian Island Twisters Gym: 24th on vault, 14th bars, 11th beam, 16th floor, 15th all-around.
Senior 1 Division: Cara Nakayama, Pantheon Gymnastics: 24th on vault, 20th bars, 17th beam, 25th floor, 21st all-around.
Senior 6 Division: Taryn Chun, Island Tumblers: 11th on vault, fourth bars, fourth beam, 21st floor.
Senior 6 Division: Kelli Ann Gyotoku, What's Up Gymnastics: 14th on vault, 20th bars, 22nd beam, 16th floor, 20th all-around.
Senior 7 Division: Lynsey Montell, Pantheon: 7th on vault, 13th bars, 20th beam, 16th floor.
PFLUEGER TAKES SECOND IN OFF-ROAD RACE
Hawai'i's Alan Pflueger finished second in an off-road race in Surprise, Ariz., which is part of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series.
Carl Renedezer won the May 2 event. Travis Coyne finished third.
