A conference tournament berth already secure, Hawai'i will close out its regular season with a four-game non-conference series against independent Utah Valley starting tomorrow at Les Murakami Stadium.

For the Rainbows (29-22), it will be business as usual as they wait to see how the rest of the Western Athletic Conference shapes up this weekend to determine seedings for the six-team tournament.

The WAC tournament is May 21 to 24 at Murakami Stadium. Hawai'i, San Jose State, Louisiana Tech and Nevada have clinched berths. New Mexico State (at Louisiana Tech) needs just one more win to earn a berth. Fresno State visits Sacramento State for a four-game series. The Bulldogs need to win three while the Hornets just need a split.

"Play to win," UH coach Mike Trapasso said of the series against the Wolverines (16-33), who took 2 of 3 from the Rainbows in last year's home series finale. "These guys can swing the bats. We're going to try to get better, try to get back to pitching the way we were a couple weeks ago. But more than anything else, you gotta play to win."

The Rainbows will use the same four starting pitchers — Jayson Kramer, Matt Sisto, Nate Klein and Jared Alexander — but the order might not be determined until today. Klein had some tenderness during his long-toss program Monday and Kramer pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief Saturday, so might be given an extra day, Trapasso said.

Catcher Landon Hernandez, who missed the last three games of the Fresno State series with wrist issues, was scheduled to have a magnetic resonance imaging yesterday. X-rays taken Monday showed no break, Trapasso said.

"I don't anticipate him being ready" for Utah Valley, Trapasso said.

Otherwise, the Rainbows are healthy. They also are completing final exams this week.

The Wolverines might have a losing record, but apparently pack an offense similar to a WAC team. They come in with a .331 team batting average. Third baseman Jace Brinkerhoff leads the team with a .447 batting average, and Jake Rickenbach (.330) leads the team with 43 RBIs. Right-hander Justin Smith (7-4, 5.10 ERA) accounts for 44 percent of the team's wins.

The Rainbows will honor five seniors after Sunday's series finale. Infielders Shane Hoey and Ryan Morford, along with Alexander, Kramer and Hernandez are completing their eligibility.
