Melissa Monette, a 16-year-old junior at Mililani High School, has been named a local winner of a Nestle Very Best in Youth 2009 award for community service.
Monette and the other 23 honorees will receive a four-day trip to Los Angeles in July for an awards ceremony. Nestle also will donate $1,000 in each of the honorees' names to a charity of their choice.
The latest recognition comes two weeks after Monette was honored in Washington, D.C., as one of America's top 10 youth volunteers and winner of a Prudential Spirit of Community Award.
Monette founded the nonprofit organization A Harvest for Many, which provides food assistance to the homeless and the elderly.
She says she was inspired by the plight of her grandmother, who needed help but failed to qualify for food assistance.
