Two of the new swine flu cases involve a teacher and a student at Anuenue School, a Hawaiian immersion school in Palolo.

Anuenue “will remain open and planned activities will proceed as scheduled,” the state Department of Education said in a statement today that only acknowledged that an adult and student at the school were confirmed cases. “Staff members have taken appropriate measures to disinfect the campus and letters are being sent home to parents.”
“When a case of H1N1 is confirmed, the state Department of Health must contact individuals who may have been exposed to the virus. We strongly encourage staff and families to extend their full cooperation to the health department during this process,” said Patricia Hamamoto, state schools superintendent.
As with other flu outbreaks, the DOE is reminding school staff and students to:
• Cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze and encourage others to do the same.
• Stay home from work if they are ill, and keep their children home from school if they are ill.
• Wash their hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizing gel.
• Avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
During the next several weeks, schools will hold events to celebrate the achievements of students and staff members. If any student or staff member develops influenza-like symptoms, they are strongly advised to stay home and not attend school, school events, or go into the community except to seek medical care.
