By Zenaida Serrano

Youth Speaks Hawai'i slam poet Jamaica Osorio performed for President Obama yesterday at the White House.

The performance was part of an evening hosted by the president and first lady Michelle Obama that celebrated poetry, music and spoken word.
Other performers included both legendary artists and up-and-comers, such as Joshua Bennett, James Earl Jones, Eric Lewis, Mayda Del Valle and Esperanza Spalding.
Osorio, a recent graduate of Kamehameha Schools and freshman at Stanford University, performed a poem she wrote entitled "Kumulipo."
The Palolo Valley resident, 18, was among five teens in Youth Speaks Hawai'i who won first place at the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival last year in Washington, D.C.
