After losing to host Dixie State earlier in the day, the Hawai'i Pacific softball team beat UC San Diego, 4-3, yesterday in an elimination game of the NCAA II West Regional at St. George, Utah.

The Sea Warriors (42-11) will play Dixie State (38-10) today, but must beat the Red Storm twice to reach the Super Regional.

Sherise Musquiz scattered five hits, and Maile Kim and Krystal Plunkett each hit two-run homers in HPU's win over UCSD.

"It was a great win for us," said HPU coach Bryan Nakasone. "We still need two more wins, but getting past the loss this morning to Dixie State was difficult, and the girls did it."

Earlier, Lauren Folta and Brittnie Whipple teamed on a seven-hitter as Dixie State beat HPU, 5-0, to go to 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament.

GOLF

PARK LEADING HICKAM

Henry Park shot a 2-under-par 70 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead into today's final round of the Hickam Invitational at the Mamala Bay Golf Course.

Park, who has a two-round total of 139, leads Mathew Ma (70) by one and Rudy Cabalar Jr. (71) by two.

TADD IN PGA EVENT

Tadd Fujikawa will play in the $6.1 million Valero Texas Open this week in San Antonio.

The 18-year-old Moanalua High senior received a sponsor's exemption into the PGA Tour event. He will also play in the Pro-Ams tomorrow and Wednesday.

Fujikawa, who turned pro a few months after tying for 20th at the 2007 Sony Open in Hawai'I, made his first PGA Tour cut as a professional at this year's Sony, where he tied for 32nd. In March, he was 52nd at the Honda Classic and 31st at the Puerto Rico Open.

SEKI, KAMDEN ADVANCE

Jim Seki and Brakel Kamden each shot 67 yesterday at Turtle Bay Resort's Fazio Course to earn berths in sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open.

BASEBALL

HPU ELIMINATED

Matt Fox had three hits and four RBIs, and John Stanko added four hits and three RBIs as Grand Canyon beat Hawai'i Pacific, 16-6, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference Little World Series game at St. George, Utah.

Aaron Asher hit a two-run double and two-run homer for the Sea Warriors, who went 2-2 in the double-elimination tournament.

Dixie State then beat Grand Canyon, 9-8, for the title last night.
