In an impressive finishing kick to recruiting, the Hawai'i football team yesterday secured a written commitment from a junior-college placekicker.
"I'm happy to be a Warrior," said Scott Enos of Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif.
By signing a scholarship agreement with the Warriors, Enos turned down offers from Texas-El Paso and New Mexico State.
"The location is perfect," said Enos, who was raised in Sacramento. "The weather is great out there. The people are so welcoming. It's like a family."
Enos is a successful product of Chris Sailer's prestigious kicking program. At Sailer's 2008 Spring Event by Nike, Enos placed first in field goals and fifth in kickoffs among JC and transfer kickers.
Enos was named to the Grid-Wire Preseason All-America third team in 2008.
Sailer recommended Enos to Chris Tormey, UH's special teams coordinator. Enos was invited on a recruiting trip last week.
"It was just for one night," Enos said. "I had finals. I couldn't spend a whole lot of time out there."
But the visit left an indelible impression.
"It's a really good program," Enos said. "I like the coaches."
Enos, who is 6 feet and 180 pounds, will give the Warriors a boost on kickoffs. On his Web site, Sailer marveled about Enos' leg strength.
"The deepest (field goal), with a little bit of wind, was 60 yards in practice," Enos said.
Enos, who has a background in soccer, has been a placekicker since the seventh grade. His intense workout program includes resistance training.
"You'll see pitchers in the major leagues use resistance bands on their arms to strengthen them and gain arm speed," Enos said. "For kicking, I like to use resistance bands for my legs. It helps build leg speed. Other than that, I go over technique and stretching. Being flexible is very important."
Enos completes work on his associate degree next week.
He will join the Warriors this summer. He will attend summer session, as well as take part in the offseason conditioning program and unsupervised workouts.
