Registration open for Maui junior lifeguard program

WAILUKU, Maui — Registration is under way for Mau County's junior lifeguard program, which familiarizes youths with water safety skills; first aid, CPR and rescue techniques; ocean swimming and paddleboarding.
Two-week sessions for both pool and ocean safety programs will be in Central, South and West Maui from June 15 to 26 and July 6 to 17. Pool sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon weekdays, with the ocean safety program to run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Five-day programs will be held on Lana'i from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community Pool from June 22 to 26, and at Hana Bay from July 20 to 24. Registration for the Lana'i program will begin May 15, and for the Hana program, June 15.
Participants in all programs must have strong swimming skills and pass a swimming test.
The pool program is offered to youths ages 11 to 17, while the ocean safety program is offered to youths ages 13 to 17.
The course is offered for a suggested donation of $15, payable by check to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association-Maui Chapter. Class size is limited to 12; registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at the Kahului, Kihei and Lahaina pools.
The Department of Parks and Recreation also is offering free learn-to-swim classes to be held Saturdays in June and July at the Upcountry Pool and the New Wailuku Pool for children ages 4 to 10. Class times are 9 to 9:45 a.m. for level I and 10 to 10:45 a.m. for level II. In-water parent participation is encouraged for level I classes.
