Coast Guard cutter to conduct pyrotechnic testing off Oahu tonight

Advertiser Staff

The U.S. Coast Guard said its cutter Ahi is scheduled to conduct "pyrotechnics" training off Oahu's south shore around sunset tonight.

The Ahi is an 87-foot coastal patrol boat home ported in Honolulu Harbor with a crew of 11. The crew will practice with smoke flares, day and night flares and other signaling devices from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The Coast Guard said it will alert all mariners in the area via VHF marine band channel 16 and has alerted the Honolulu Fire Department and Oahu Civil Defense in order to keep 911 dispatchers and the general public informed.

The Ahi's crew is scheduled to launch the flares approximately 5 to 6 nautical miles south of the Honolulu Harbor entrance buoy. Anyone with questions may contact the Coast Guard's 24-hour command center at Sand Island via marine band channel 16 or 842-2600.
