As a cost-cutting move, the Western Athletic Conference Council is looking at reducing the number of schools that will qualify for its championships.

Women's volleyball and baseball currently qualify six of the WAC's nine members' teams for their tournaments and other sports could soon follow, commissioner Karl Benson said yesterday.

"We're evaluating all sports," Benson said as the WAC Council, made up of athletic directors, senior women's administrators and faculty representatives head into their final day of meetings today in Phoenix, Ariz.

The move is aimed at saving costs and putting more emphasis on the regular season in conference play. Benson said the conference office is also evaluating ways to save money in its operations.

In other action, the WAC baseball tournament will move to a neutral site, Mesa, Ariz., for three years beginning in 2010, subject to approval by the WAC Board of Directors next month.

This 2009 tournament will be held May 21-24 at Les Murakami Stadium.

Benson said the conference is still discussing moving the basketball tournament to either Las Vegas or Salt Lake City in 2011.
