Hawaii unbeaten in first round

Hawai'i surfers went undefeated on the opening day of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship yesterday.

The first round of the Boys 18 and Boys 16 divisions were run in 3- to 4-foot waves at Salinas, Ecuador.

Hawai'i surfers Tanner Hendrickson, Albee Layer and Dylan Goodale advanced in the Boys 18 division; Keanu Asing, Ezekiel Lau, Kaimana Jaquias and Matty Costa advanced in the Boys 16 division.

Jaquias had one of the best heats of the day in the Boys 16 division, receiving a two-wave score of 14.16 (out of 20).

Jaquias and Asing tied for the best single wave of the day in the Boys 16 division with a 7.83.

The Girls 18 division did not run heats yesterday.

The week-long competition is considered the world championship for surfers age 18 and younger. More than 260 surfers representing 28 countries/regions are participating.
