Premiere screening of 'Pidgin: The Voice of Hawaii' Thursday at UH
The University of Hawai'i at Manoa Hawai'iunuakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge will present "Pidgin: The Voice of Hawai'i," at 5:30 p.m. April 2 in the Art Auditorium on campus.
This one-hour documentary film tells the story of Hawai'i's everyday language, a patois developed to link people from different cultures joined by their common labor.
The premiere of the film honors the late Kanalu Young, who produced the film with Marlene Booth and held a doctorate in history, composed songs and chants (including the pre-game ha'a for the UH-Manoa football team) and wrote about Hawaiian sovereignty and colonization in the Pacific.
