Penn expected to defend title Aug. 8 in Philadelphia
Advertiser Staff
Hilo's BJ Penn will defend his UFC lightweight world championship against Boston's Kenny Florian on Aug. 8, according to an article on www.bjpenn.com.
The bout is expected to headline the UFC 101 card at Philadelphia.
Penn is 13-5-1, including 8-1-1 in the UFC's lightweight division. Florian is 11-3 and considered the No. 1 contender in the lightweight division.
"I look forward to the challenge," Penn is quoted as saying on his Web site.
It will be Penn's first bout since a loss to Georges St-Pierre in a "super fight" on Jan. 31. That bout was in the welterweight (170 pounds) division, and Penn's lightweight (155) championship was not at stake.
Penn filed a complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission seeking sanctions against St-Pierre for the excessive use of Vaseline in between rounds of the bout. However, the NSAC ruled that St-Pierre would not be disciplined and the outcome of the bout — a fourth-round TKO win by St-Pierre — would stand.
