Warriors triumph in Japan

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team won the Naris Cup at Sakushu Musashi Country Club yesterday in Okayama, Japan. The Warriors' last top-three finish came in the 2007 Western Athletic Championship, which they lost by a stroke.
Their three-round total in Japan was 897 (294-305-298).
UH was led by junior Robert Berton, who was fourth individually at 5-over-par 221 (74-72-75). It was the fifth time in eight tournaments Berton has led the 'Bows. Freshman TJ Kua was at 73—224. Underclassmen Kamden Brakel (71—225), Jared Sawada (79—233) and Pono Calip (82—239) were next.
UH-Hilo senior Stephen Zane, a Baldwin graduate from Pukalani, shared medalist honors with Kosuke Ueda of Doshisha. Both finished at 2-over 218. The Vulcans were second in the 10-team competition at 911.
Participating as individuals were UH seniors Chase Bingham (76—249) and Cody Pewarchuk (90—262) and sophomore Daniel Soglanich (81—271).
Hawai'i's highest previous finish this season was eighth during the fall Turtle Bay Intercollegiate.
The Warriors next play the Cougar Classic, April 24 to 25 in Provo, Utah. The WAC Championship is the following week in Las Vegas.
