Graced by two famous athletic surnames from Kalihi lore, Farrington sophomore Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo lived up to the legacy this past basketball season in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association.
Tatupu-Leopoldo, a 5-foot-9 guard/forward, scored from all angles and distances in helping the Governors rise to the league championship for the first time since 1991. And she left her own mark in the history books by being named OIA Red Conference Eastern Division Player of the Year after a recent vote of league coaches.
In an OIA semifinal against Kalani, Tatupu-Leopoldo hit five 3-pointers and scored 29 points in an 80-72 victory. The Govs went on to defeat Roosevelt twice in three days to claim the title and finish 18-1 in league play.
Back in 1983, Tatupu-Leopoldo's father, Steven, was named OIA East Player of the Year after helping Farrington win its first league championship in nine years. Her uncle, Mosi Tatupu, was a standout three-sport athlete at Punahou and played 15 seasons in the NFL.
Tatupu-Leopoldo is joined on the first team by fellow Gov, classmate and cousin Kirsten Liana, Roosevelt senior Tasia Kamakawiwo'ole, Kalani senior Ashlyn Onaga and McKinley junior Kylie Sato.
Liana gave the Govs inside scoring and rebounding. Kamakawiwo'ole helped the Rough Riders overcome midseason injuries to reach the league finals. Onaga and Sato were two of the league's top 3-point threats.
Abel Werner was named Coach of the Year after guiding McKinley to a runner-up finish in the East.
