$200M slated for military facilities

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Hawai'i military facilities will get more than $200 million in federal stimulus money for a variety of renovations that include airport runways, wharfs, roads and buildings.
"These are projects that are supposed to be 'shovel-ready,' " Mike Yuen, a spokesman for U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, said yesterday. "The whole goal of the stimulus bill is to get projects going that will help the economy as soon as possible."
According to information from Inouye and Sen. Daniel Akaka, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will provide to Hawai'i:
$37.2 million for wharf and pier upgrades at Naval Station Pearl Harbor.
$32.6 million for photovoltaic energy systems at Navy facilities.
$31.5 million for repairs to Hickam Air Force Base headquarters building and $15.7 million for other improvements at Hickam.
$31.5 million for a runway repair at the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kaua'i.
$19.4 million for a new child development center and $3.9 million for headquarters window repairs at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kane'ohe.
$18.5 million for roof, road and bridge repairs at Schofield Barracks, Fort Ruger and Wheeler Army Airfield.
$10.8 million for upgrades at Tripler Army Medical Center.
$1.9 million for Ka'ena Point Satellite Tracking Station upgrades.
