Bolla, UH expected to meet

University of Hawai'i women's basketball coach Jim Bolla is expected to meet with school administration in a session that could help decide how much longer he remains at the school, a person claiming knowledge of the situation said yesterday.

Bolla has been on paid leave since Feb. 13 while the school's Office of Human Resources looked into an allegation that he kicked a player during practice earlier this season.

A copy of the OHR report, which was said to have "sustained allegations," according to a person claiming knowledge but not authorized to speak publicly, was said to have been provided to Bolla recently. Bolla has not made himself available for comment on the situation.

It was not known how soon a meeting might take place.

UH-Manoa spokesman Gregg Takayama said, "personnel actions are confidential, so I cannot comment."

Not specifically addressing the Bolla case, UH officials said earlier that procedure in situations involving complaints against staff members usually results in a meeting with the departmental supervisor, who decides what action will be taken.

But athletic department staffers said athletic director Jim Donovan is out of state on vacation. An automated response from Donovan's e-mail address said he will return March 30. Donovan did not answer e-mail requests for comment yesterday.

Under terms of his contract, Bolla may contest any findings against him. If he is unsuccessful, action, including termination, could be taken under terms of a contract that has two seasons remaining at more than $120,000 per year.

Under his contract, if Bolla is terminated for cause he must be given 10 days' notice.

Bolla has spent five seasons at UH.
