OSAKA, Japan — Mongolia's Hakuho overpowered compatriot Kyokutenho on Friday to stay tied for the lead with fellow grand champion Asashoryu at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

Hakuho got a left-hand grip on the belt of Kyokutenho and forced the komusbi out in the day's final bout at Osaka Municipal Gymnasium to stay undefeated at 6-0. Kyokutenho was handed his fourth loss against a pair of wins.

In the previous bout, Asashoryu used an arm throw at the center of the ring to send No. 2 maegashira Kotoshogiku sprawling to the dirt surface while improving to 6-0.

Kotoshogiku pushed Asashoryu back at the faceoff, but was overwhelmed by the powerful arm throw of the Mongolian grand champion and fell to 1-4.

Asashoryu is bidding for his 24th Emperor's Cup while Hakuho is seeking his 10th. Asashoryu defeated Hakuho in an extra deciding bout at the New Year tournament after the pair finished 14-1.

In other major bouts, Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu got both hands on the belt of Kakuryu and calmly lifted the top maegashira out to record his fourth win against a pair of losses. Kakuryu was handed his fourth loss.

Ozeki Kaio stayed one win off the pace when he waltzed out winless top maegashira Hokutoriki to pick up his fifth win against a lone loss.

Estonian sekiwake Baruto fought off series of arm thrusts from Chiyotaikai and muscled the struggling ozeki out to move to 3-3. Chiyotaikai has struggled in the first half of the tournament and saw his record fall to 1-5.

Ozeki Kotomitsuki took advantage of a superior faceoff to shove Tokitenku out in a matter of seconds. Kotomitsuki improved to 3-2 while No. 3 maegashira Tokitenku dropped to 2-3.

Ozeki Harumafuji of Mongolia was handed his second loss of the tournament when he was overpowered by Tochiozan.

Tochiozan, a No. 2 maegashira, got a left-hand grip on the back of Harumafuji's belt and shoved the ozeki out to improve to 3-3. Haurmafuji fell to 4-2.
