Reproductive justice exists when all citizens have the economic, social and political power and resources to make healthy decisions about their bodies, sexuality and reproduction for themselves, their families and their communities, say organizers of an event this weekend.
Learn more about reproductive justice at Fertile Grounds for Reproductive Justice Convening, tomorrow through Sunday at Kapi'olani Community College. The conference is presented by the Women's Fund of Hawai'i, a grant-making foundation dedicated to supporting women and girls in Hawai'i.
Organizers hope the conference will raise awareness in the community in the area of reproductive justice, and hope particularly to reach out to those who may be interested in applying for a Fertile Grounds for Reproductive Justice grant in the fall, said Adria Estribou, executive director of the Women's Fund of Hawai'i.
The event is for "anyone who's passionate about reproductive justice and curious about what the current issues are in Hawai'i," Estribou said.
The conference includes discussions on rights of pregnant women, sexuality control and the right to be a parent. There will also be a presentation on building skills in planning organizing or advocacy activities by Expanding the Movement for Empowerment and Reproductive Justice, a program of Asian Communities for Reproductive Justice.
Those who cannot attend but want to support reproductive justice grantmaking can make a donation to the Fertile Grounds for Reproductive Justice campaign (see box for contact information). All donations will be matched by the Tides Foundation; 100 percent of all donations will go toward reproductive justice grantmaking in Hawai'i.
