Peter Rodgers and Shane Kessel drove in two runs apiece for UHH (8-7, 3-3).

In the first game, Rodgers drove in three runs in support of winning pitcher Clayton Uyechi as Hilo beat Grand Canyon (9-16, 3-7), 7-3.

Alohikea-Betham's two-out blast made a winner of Katresha Veazie (6-10), who pitched eight innings, allowing seven hits, one walk and one earned run. She struck out three.

TENNIS

UH OPENS AT 'BAMA

Hawai'i tennis will make its debut at the prestigious Blue-Gray Classic Thursday.

The Rainbows play 28th-ranked Wisconsin in the first round in Montgomery, Ala.

The invitational tournament runs five days and has a dual-match format, with 16 teams.

The Rainbows (2-4) will play No. 23 Alabama or No. 58 Middle Tennessee in the second round. They are led by sophomore Dennis Lajola, who is ranked No. 116 and has a 12-5 singles record.

Wisconsin is 9-4, with four wins over Top 25 teams. Freshman Marek Michalicka is ranked 41st individually and has wins over six ranked opponents.

Yesterday, the Rainbow Wahine (5-5) won their third straight match, defeating Division II Chaminade, 6-1. The 'Bows did not give up more than two games in any of their singles matches, except at No. 5, where the Swords' Silkie Kawahakui defeated Crystine Ito, winning a tiebreaker after the two split sets, 6-2, 3-6.

GOLF

UH WOMEN IN FIFTH

Hawai'i opened its 24th annual Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational by shooting 306 — two off its season best — yesterday at Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course. The Rainbow Wahine are in a three-way tie for fifth with Boise State and Texas A&M.

Idaho leads going into today's second round, at 9-over-par 297. Nevada and Japan's Osaka Gakuin share second (303).

UH junior Corie Hou is tied for seventh after firing a 74. She is five shots off the lead, which is held by Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro. UH senior Carolina Perez (76) shares 14th, while Phyllis Lai and Erin Matsuoka both shot 78 and are tied for 22nd.

Mortellaro, Texas A&M's Lauren Johnson (71) and Nevada's Melanie DeLeon (71) were the only golfers under par.

The tournament ends tomorrow.
