Ala Wai School second-graders Evon Diep, left, and Kailani Kaawa today harvested cabbages for St. Patrick's Day. Throughout the year, the students tend to a garden. Sometimes the vegetables become part of the students' school lunch, and sometimes they get to take them home.

Second-graders in Mrs. Alison Fukuda's class at Ala Wai Elementary School harvested cabbage — really big ones — today in honor of St. Patrick's Day.

As part of their ongoing science lessons, the students maintain a garden throughout the school year and tend to cabbage, lettuce, beets, eggplant and corn.

The student farmers are assisted by teachers and the school's custodians and cafeteria manager.

Sometimes the vegetables become part of their lunches, other times they get to take the fruits of their labor home.
