Advertiser Staff

A 33-year-old Hilo man was killed yesterday in a single-vehicle crash on Amaulu Road, just over a mile west of Wainaku Avenue in Hilo, Hawai'i County police said.

The man was identified as Jaime Rain Church.

Police said Church was driving a Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck west-bound on Amaulu Road when he lost control, ran off the roadway and hit a tree about 2:20 a.m.

Church was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m.

Police say speed and alcohol were involved. Police ask anyone with information on this crash to call Officer Robert Pauole at 808-961-8119.

SEARCH CONTINUES FOR KAUA'I SURFER

The Coast Guard and Kaua'i County rescue personnel yesterday searched for a surfer who was reported missing in waters off Anahola yesterday afternoon.

The surfer, a 34-year-old Moloa'a man, was last seen about 1:30 p.m. when he was hit by a large wave and fell off his board at a spot called "Crack 14" around the bend from Kuna Bay. The Kaua'i Fire Department and county ocean safety lifeguards began looking for the man and were later joined by Coast Guard rescue crews from Barbers Point on O'ahu.

The fire department suspended its search when darkness fell and said it would resume its search at daybreak today. The Coast Guard planned to search through the night with its HH-65 helicopter.

Anyone with information on the case should contact Coast Guard Sector Honolulu at 808-842-2600.
