$25,000 grant aids Care-A-Van clinic

The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has given a $25,000 grant to Waikiki Health Center to expand medical, mental health and social services to homeless residents of Windward O'ahu.

The grant allows the health center's Care-A-Van to seek out homeless encampments from Waimanalo to Malaekahana.

The mobile clinic features a private exam room, which allows Care-A-Van to provide traditionally clinic-based services "on location," including breast cancer screening, reproductive health check-ups, children's health care and other services.

Sheila Beckham, director of the center, said the center is grateful for the grant. "It's important for island families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to know that Waikiki Health Center is here for them, wherever they live and regardless of their ability to pay."
