UH pitcher Spangler honored

Hawai'i relief pitcher Sam Spangler yesterday was named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced.

The sophomore left-hander totaled 7 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in two appearances over the weekend at the Dairy Queen Classic at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out nine in two appearances against Minnesota. In the first game, in which he went 3 1/3 innings, he got a save.

The Rainbows (3-5) went 2-2 on their recent road trip to Minnesota, finishing 1-2 in the Classic. They open a four-game series Thursday against No. 26 Mississippi State at Les Murakami Stadium.


SOFTBALL

MILCA HITTER OF WEEK

University of Hawai'i outfielder Tanisha Milca yesterday was named the Western Athletic Conference softball Hitter of the Week, the conference announced.

Milca led the Rainbow Wahine to the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational title with six hits in eight at-bats, including her first grand slam.

The home run was the 26th of her career, putting her in sixth place in school history.

Nevada's pitcher Mallary Darby was named pitcher of the week after a 3-0 record.

The Rainbow Wahine open the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament against Mount St. Mary at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

BYUH SWEEPS

Melissa Lehano hit a solo home run in the first game and had three hits and two RBIs in the second game as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Grand Canyon 5-4 and 6-2 yesterday at BYUH softball field in La'ie. BYUH is 7-11 overall and 3-3 in the Pacific West Conference. Grand Canyon is 19-6 and 4-4.


GOLF

FOUR BALL CO-CHAMPS

The teams of Brett Komoto/Chris Byrer and Ryan Perez/Robby Berton were declared co-champions of the Championship Flight in the HSGA Four Ball Championship that concluded Sunday at Ted Makalena Golf Course.

Both teams finished with 36-hole scores of 8-under 134.

Alvin Okada and John Mathias won A Flight with 138, and Ken Suzuki and Lavaisela Taleni took B Flight with 149.

UH-HILO TRYOUTS SET

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's soccer team will hold tryouts March 11 to 13.

Participants must be full-time students at UH-Hilo, in good academic standing and complete a Tryout Release and Waiver of Liability form.
