Matson Navigation Co., Hawaiçi's largest trans-Pacific shipping company, has reached a tentative four-year deal with three offshore unions, according to Matson spokesman Jeff Hull.
The settlement on a new contract came after one of the unions, the American Radio Association, went on strike this morning in Seattle, temporarily stranding a container ship bound for Hawaiçi.
Following the tentative settlement, Hull said longshoremen and crew were expected to return to work to get the SS Maui on its way to Oakland.
Terms of the new deal were not disclosed. The agreement must next be ratified by the unions' memberships.
The other unions involved in the talks were the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots and the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association.
The unions involved in the talks represent crewmembers, including captains, on Matson Navigation Co.s trans-Pacific cargo ships.
The three were the only unions involved in the contract talks.
Matson carries two-thirds of the containerized freight to Hawai'i.
