USA champ guest poser at bodybuilding event

Advertiser Staff

Brandon Curry, who won the 2008 heavyweight and overall titles at the USA Championships, will be the guest poser at the 31st Hawaiian Islands bodybuilding event tomorrow at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

The 5-foot-7 Curry has made a quick ascent to the top. He won his first bodybuilding competition in the 2003. He came in second as a light-heavyweight in the 2006 NPC Junior National championships. The following year, Curry weighed 217 pounds and finished second in the heavyweight division at the NPC USA Championships and second in the NPC National Championships.

Tomorrow's event starts at 6:30 p.m. and will feature bodybuilding, figure and, for the first time, bikini championships.

This show is sanctioned by the N.P.C (National Physique Committee) and the overall winners will receive sponsorship to compete in the USA or National Championships and a signature watch.

Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster and at the Concert Hall tomorrow. Prices are $45, $40, $35, $30 and $25.

CALLING ALL POOL SHARKS: O'AHU LEAGUE STARTING

The American Poolplayers Association, the nation's largest amateur pool organization, is forming teams throughout O'ahu for the summer session.

Each APA Pool League team consists of five to eight amateurs who compete seasonally or year round in weekly league play. The APA's handicap system allows players to compete equally with players of different skill levels.

Teams are now being formed for 8 Ball and 9 Ball in Central O'ahu, according to franchise holder Dante Guagliardo. A player meeting for 8 Ball will be 7:30 p.m. Monday at Brandy's Bar and Grill, 4510 Salt Lake Blvd. A meeting for 9 Ball will be 7:30 p.m. July 1 at Sand Island Sports Club, 197 Sand Island Access Road.

By participating in weekly league play, members can qualify to compete in three national championships — singles, team and amateur — in Las Vegas that award nearly $1.5 million in cash and prizes.

The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Mo., sanctions the world's largest amateur pool league throughout the United States and in Canada. More than 260,000 members compete in weekly 8-Ball and 9-Ball league play.

For more information or to sign up, contact Guagliardo at 808-520-1135 or at oahuapa@gmail.com. The official APA Web site is www.poolplayers.com.
