LAHAINA, Maui — McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii Inc. is planning a $1.2 million project to demolish its Lahaina outlet and replace it with a new 4,365-square-foot restaurant.

The new McDonald’s will be one of the first worldwide to embody in its interior design the company’s new theme of “Forever Young,” according to a draft environmental assessment filed with the state Office of Environmental Quality Control. The exterior design will honor the historical architectural character of Lahaina town and native plants will be used in the landscaping, the report said.
The current restaurant was built in 1983 on a half-acre lot at the corner of Päpalaua and Waineçe streets, within the Lahaina National Historic Landmark District. Construction is expected to take five to six months, once special management area use permits and other approvals are obtained.
