Pillow talk has become public talk for some stars. “The boundaries about what celebrities do and don’t talk about are changing as the media is expanding and the news cycle speeds up,” says Us Weekly’s Melanie Bromley. Bromley decodes celebs’ candid comments on sex for USA Today.

Speculation about the “American Idol” runner-up’s sexuality ended when the singer came out in the June 25 issue of Rolling Stone.
The comment: “I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I’m gay,” he told Rolling Stone. “I think I reserve the right to talk about my own sexuality. ... I kind of like things dangling over my head anyway. Lately, you know, there’s a part of me that’s almost bi-curious the other way around. I’ve made out a few times with girls at nightclubs. ... I don’t know if it would ever happen, but I’m kind of interested.”
The bottom line: “This is a boy that went from obscurity to mega-fame in a very short space of time, and who had to open himself up very, very quickly,” Bromely says. “He chose not to speak about his sexuality at first because it was the one thing he wanted to keep for himself. But he finally spoke out in a magazine he must have dreamt about appearing in his whole life.”
Lady Gaga
The chart-topping “Just Dance” singer is in the spotlight as much for her edgy music as she is for her outspokenness about sex and drugs.
The comment: “I don’t think being gay or being bisexual or being sexually free is anything that should be hidden. Everybody has a right to their secrecy, of course, but I don’t feel particularly shy about it,” she told USA Today in June. “It is who I am. I sing very openly about it ... so I suppose I could say that I choose not to hide it in interviews because I don’t care to hide it, and because it is very obvious in my music that I like women.”
The bottom line: “She’s a new celebrity that isn’t so controlled by the PR machine, that’s able to say what she really feels,” Bromely says. “It’s all part of her evolution.”
Megan Fox
People have been comparing the sexy “Transformers” star to Angelina Jolie ever since the pouty-lipped, tattooed actress hit the scene. The two also share a willingness to experiment with their sexuality.
The comment: “I have no question in my mind about being bisexual,” Fox says in the June issue of Esquire. “But I’m also a hypocrite: I would never date a girl who was bisexual, because that means they also sleep with men, and men are so dirty that I’d never want to sleep with a girl who had slept with a man.”
The bottom line: “Thankfully we are now living in a time when people can say they’re bisexual and say they’re gay very openly, and people do not judge them on that,” Bromely says. “She’s able to be herself without worrying about the repercussions.”
Katy Perry
She kissed a girl and she liked it, but these days the cheeky pop star is more interested in discussing which men she’d like to hook up with.
The comment: “I couldn’t marry John Mayer, it’d be so intense,” she said during an on-air game with an Australian radio station May 18. “I’d definitely shag the (expletive) out of him though. I’ll go on record saying that.”
The bottom line: “Pop stars have talked about being virgins, but we’re in an age where pop stars are now talking about sex. It shows how far things have come in recent years,” Bromley says.
Brooke Shields
The “Lipstick Jungle” actress is one of America’s legendary sex symbols, making the line “You wanna know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing” a cultural touchstone. But her sex life as a young woman may not have been everything we imagined.
The comment: “I think I wouldn’t have had issues with weight — I carried this protective 20 pounds. ... It was all connected,” she said of her biggest health regret in the June issue of Health magazine. “I think I would have lost my virginity earlier than I did at 22.”
The bottom line: “She’s at an age where she’s able to reflect back on her life and shatter the image that we have of her in a very positive way,” Bromley says. “She’s showing people that you might look perfect, but actually underneath the surface, it could be a very different thing.”
