Soccer: Italy out of Confed Cup after 3-0 loss to Brazil

PRETORIA, South Africa — World champion Italy was surprisingly eliminated in the first round of the Confederations Cup, losing to Brazil 3-0 tonight.
In a match between the nations with the most World Cup titles, Luis Fabiano in the 37th and 43rd minutes, and Andrea Dossena accidentally deflected a cross past goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon for an own goal in the 45th.
Brazil (3-0), a five-time world champion, won Group B with nine points and will play host South Africa in the semifinals on Thursday. The United States, Italy and Egypt all finished 1-2, but the Americans scored four goals and allowed six.
Italy, a four-time world champion, also had a minus-2 goal difference but scored only three goals. Egypt was minus-3.
