CHEAP READS
The best reason to get sweaty this summer is the annual Friends of the Library Booksale. It's the most uncomfortable you'll ever be while shopping for books — too many people crowded into a sweatbox of a room — but if you can muscle through it, you'll come away with the kind of satisfaction that only comes from knowing you bought some solid literature for a really, really low price. We've found everything from the latest Dan Brown novel ($1.50) to a 1913 "Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" ($2.50) to an autographed copy of Joseph Heller's "Catch-22" ($1). The nine-day sale starts Saturday with more than 100,000 books for sale. All the books will be 50 cents June 28, the last day of the sale. But we suggest going early before all the good stuff is gone.
Friends of the Library Booksale / McKinley High School / Saturday through June 28 / Schedule at www.friendsofthelibraryofhawaii.org / 536-4174
YEAR OF THE CAVEMAN
Jack Black and Michael Cera together in a movie about cavemen has the potential to be ridiculously funny, so we're hoping Roger Ebert is way off in his thumbs-down review. We really, really want it to be hilarious. Opens today.
WITH 1980S FLAIR
Los Angeles-based dance crew and MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew" finalist Fanny Pak will perform at the 50th State Fair at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday. Hawai'i's Cara Horibe, known in the dance world as Barracuda, is a member of the crew, and will be there, too.
TO MARKET, TO MARKET
The new Honolulu Farmers Market, which takes place at the Blaisdell Center from 4 to 7 p.m every Wednesday, is drawing big crowds hungry for homegrown goods. Now in season: lychee. Get it for much cheaper than supermarket prices.
PEACE IN CHINATOWN
Celebrate the 40th anniversary of "The Summer of Love" (1969) and the 51st anniversary of the peace sign with a hippie-themed block party happening today from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the Chinatown Arts District. There's food, music and ... hippies.
CRAYON ROCK
Unity Crayons is back with an all-ages rock show at 8 p.m. Saturday at Coffee Talk in Kaimuki ($5 cover). Go Jimmy Go, Black Square, Die Slow and the Jumpoffs are slated to perform.
