Rudy Cabalar, who nearly won the Hickam Invitational before his freshman year was over at Campbell High School, ousted four-time champion Brandan Kop in yesterday's opening round of the 101st Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club.
Cabalar, 14, defeated Kop, 2 and 1, to earn a place in today's second round.
Lorens Chan, who just turned 15, was not so successful. He fell to Edward MacNaughton, 2 and 1. Chan reached the semifinals of Manoa Cup — the state's amateur match play championship — as a 13-year old. He has won the State Stroke Play and State High School championships this year.
Kalena Preus, another 14-year old, also advanced with a 4-and-2 victory.
Ryan Perez defeated Kellen-Floyd Asao, 4 and 2, in a battle of former Manoa Cup champions and University of Hawai'i teammates. Perez will play Donny Hopoi, another teenager, this morning.
On the other side of the bracket, defending champion Alex Ching needed just 12 holes to win his opening-round match. He will play Craig Watanabe this morning at 7 in the first match of the second round.
Next off the tee are Bou-An Fujieki and 2007 Manoa champion Kurt Nino, whose 9-and-7 victory was yesterday's most lopsided match.
