DENVER — Troy Tulowitzki figured if he and the Colorado Rockies were going to lose for the first time in two weeks, they might as well lose big.

The Tampa Rays hit five homers among their franchise-record 11 extra-base hits and smashed Colorado's 11-game winning streak, 12-3, last night.

"It's not like we can say, 'Oh, it was a close game. If we'd have gotten that clutch hit in the end,' " Tulowitzki reasoned. "They beat us up pretty good. Now, we just start over tomorrow."

Colorado's winning streak was tied with Boston for the longest in the majors this season and also tied for the longest in Rockies' history, matching the mark set during their 21-1 run to the 2007 World Series.

Although they failed to make it an even dozen straight victories and climb back to .500, the Rockies have turned what was looking like a lost season into one in which they believe they'll contend deep into the summer, at least for the wild card.

"I think we've grown more confidence to know we can compete," Tulowitzki said. "But now the bar is set higher."

The longest winning streak in the majors now belongs to the Rays at six games. They got home runs from Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena, Gabe Kapler, Ben Zobrist and B.J. Upton.

Right-hander Jeff Niemann (6-4) benefited from the offensive outburst. Niemann (6-4) allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits and two walks in five innings in his first career start against the Rockies.

"Boy, that was a fun win right there," Zobrist said. "Our pitching pitched well and kept the distance there once we got ahead early and the bats just kept pouring on."

YANKEES 5, NATIONALS 3:

Robinson Cano hit a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning and matched a career high with four hits, leading CC Sabathia and host New York to victory. Sabathia (6-4) held Washington in check after light-hitting Anderson Hernandez's three-run homer in the fifth gave the Nationals the lead. The 6-foot-7 left-hander departed after walking Nick Johnson with two outs in the eighth.

MARINERS 5, PADRES 0:

Felix Hernandez pitched a two-hitter to lead visiting Seattle over San Diego, handing the Padres a record-setting 12th straight interleague loss. Hernandez (7-3) allowed only a leadoff single to Kevin Kouzmanoff in the third inning and Tony Gwynn Jr.'s leadoff single in the ninth. Franklin Gutierrez and Adrian Beltre each hit solo homers for Seattle.

RED SOX 8, MARLINS 2:

David Ortiz homered to start a six-run fourth inning, then added a two-run single to finish it for host Boston. Tim Wakefield (9-3) allowed two runs in six innings to improve to 6-0 at Fenway Park this season. Ortiz, who did not homer in the first six weeks of the season, now has five for the year — four of them in the last nine games.

ANGELS 8, GIANTS 1:

Mike Napoli had a three-run homer among his four hits, pitcher Sean O'Sullivan won his major league debut, and visiting Los Angeles won its season-best fifth straight. O'Sullivan (1-0) was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake to make the start after the Angels scratched Ervin Santana. O'Sullivan allowed five hits and one run, struck out five and walked one in seven strong innings.

BLUE JAYS 8, PHILLIES 3:

Scott Rolen singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning and visiting Toronto beat Philadelphia. The Blue Jays rallied for a run in the ninth when fill-in closer Ryan Madson walked Lyle Overbay with the bases loaded to make it 3-3. With one out in the 10th, Aaron Hill and Vernon Wells had consecutive singles, setting up Rolen's RBI hit against Clay Condrey (4-2).

ROYALS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 0:

Gil Meche pitched a four-hit shutout and Mark Teahen had three hits and drove in a run for host Kansas City. Meche (4-5) improved to 14-4 in interleague play. His .778 winning percentage against the National League tops all active pitchers with at least 20 interleague starts.

DODGERS 5, ATHLETICS 4:

Matt Kemp's game-winning single with two outs in the 10th inning lifted host Los Angeles over Oakland. Orlando Hudson greeted Brad Ziegler (1-2) with a leadoff single and Casey Blake reached on a fielding error by shortstop Orlando Cabrera. After a double play, Kemp singled to right, scoring Hudson.

TWINS 8, PIRATES 2:

Glen Perkins won his first start off the disabled list and Joe Mauer backed him with his second four-hit game of the season for host Minnesota. Perkins (2-3) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings, striking out four and walking one. He had been on the disabled list since May 19 because of left elbow inflammation.

RANGERS 6, ASTROS 1:

Ian Kinsler homered twice and host Texas beat Houston as the Astros' Ivan Rodriguez matched the major league record for games caught. It was Rodriguez's 2,226th career game behind the plate to tie Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk. Texas' Kevin Millwood (7-4) worked seven innings.

METS 6, ORIOLES 2:

Three Orioles' errors led to three Mets runs, helping Mike Pelfrey earn his first win in more than five weeks for visiting New York. Pelfrey (5-2) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander had gone 0-2 in six starts since defeating Philadelphia on May 7.

BREWERS 7, INDIANS 5:

Yovani Gallardo won for the third time in four starts, despite walking a season-high six for visiting Milwaukee. Gallardo (7-3) gave up two runs and five hits while striking out eight. J.J. Hardy had two hits and two RBIs for Milwaukee.

CARDINALS 11, TIGERS 2:

Albert Pujols hit his fifth home run in five games and host St. Louis routed Detroit. Adam Wainwright (7-4) worked seven strong innings for the Cardinals.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

REDS 7, BRAVES 2:

Laynce Nix drove in three runs, and Brandon Phillips had three hits on a soggy field, helping host Cincinnati overcome a couple of rain delays in a victory over Atlanta. Nix drove in runs with a groundout and a pair of doubles, the last one during a four-run eighth inning. He finished with three hits.
