A Friday night fire in a Waipahu apartment was caused by a child playing with a lighter, Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

The fire began in a bedroom and caused $160,000 in damage to the apartment and its contents and caused some damage to the apartment above, Seelig said.

He urged adults to supervise children and put away lighters and matches. Seelig also advised people to have fire safety plans.
