DEN BOSCH, Netherlands — Marcos Baghdatis defeated second-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of the Ordina Open on Tuesday.
The Cypriot, who reached the Ordina Open semifinals in 2006, broke Robredo four times and dropped serve once. He will play Ramon Sluiter of the Netherlands.
"It's always good to win. It's encouraging to win against a player like Tommy," Baghdatis said.
Robredo said Baghdatis deserved to win the match, which was postponed to Tuesday because of darkness.
"Grass is not my favorite surface," Robredo said. "I think I will need a little bit of time to play my game. Marcos is a good player."
Later Tuesday, top-seeded Fernando Verdasco plays Benjamin Becker in a rain-delayed second-round match.
