NFL: Raiders, ex-Cowboy Ellis reach terms

By Steve Corkran
Contra Costa Times

The Oakland Raiders and free agent defensive end Greg Ellis agreed to terms on a contract Monday, though a contract has yet to be signed.

A person close to the negotiations said that the Raiders targeted Ellis soon after he was released by the Dallas Cowboys earlier this month.
Ellis, 33, played for the Cowboys in all of his first 11 NFL seasons. He started 156 games during his career, including all 16 last season.
In Ellis, the Raiders would get a player versatile enough to play outside linebacker in a four-linebacker, three-linemen alignment or defensive end in a 4-3 system.
The Raiders likely would use Ellis as a defensive end opposite left end Derrick Burgess in hopes of creating more pressure. No Raider recorded more than five sacks last season.
Ellis has posted six sacks or more in a season eight times. He had only three last season, though.
Overall, Ellis has 77 sacks in 162 games. He is expected to compete for playing time against the likes of third-year end Jay Richardson, second-year end Trevor Scott and rookie Matt Shaughnessy.
Ellis ostensibly would replace veteran Kalimba Edwards, who tied for the sack lead with Scott last season but was released in February. Edwards was a situational pass-rusher, for the most part.
Signing Ellis also would free up the Raiders to part ways with Burgess if they can find a team willing to provide adequate compensation.
Burgess, 30, is in the final year of the five-year contract he signed in 2005 and fresh from a season in which he missed six games because of a triceps injury.
Raiders coach Tom Cable admitted last month that teams have inquired about the prospect of trading for Burgess and that the Raiders aren’t averse to doing so if the price is right.
